Can we build a u-shaped driveway

Hi - I came across your post about u-shaped driveways and we are contemplating building one in our new house. We live on a busy road, so we have trouble exiting our driveway. We don't have a lot of space in the front, but what we do have is not attractive. Can you let me know your thoughts? I really appreciate it!!

Dear Amy,

I have done U-Shaped Driveway on very small urban lots. It's hard to tell the depth of your front yard from the photo, but your yard looks wide enough. By the front door it is good to have the width of the driveway be at least 18 feet. This allows room for two cars eliminating a bottle neck. The two legs of the driveway can narrow down to 12 feet and widen at the street to allow easy turning in or exiting. Plantings should frame the front door for a nice look from the street. If privacy is what you want, a different planting approach would be used. I hope this information helps. Thanks for submitting your question. Good luck with your project.

Nancy

I'm curious if you went ahead and did it did you remove the walkway? An after picture would be awesome.

We'd like to do it too! NEW

The distance from our porch to the sidewalk in front of our house is only 15 feet - we'd have to downsize a bit and would have very little lawn left but could we do it?
